The industry panel at DL 2020 follows in the footsteps of a successful event at the DL workshop 2019 in Oslo. We are excited to hear more about practical experiences with semantic technology. This year, we also invited excellent panelists from companies building and selling semantic applications, including two recent start-ups.
Diego Calvanese (Ontopic)
Diego Calvanese is a full professor at the Research Centre for Knowledge and Data (KRDB), Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy) and visiting professor in Artificial Intelligence for Data Management at Umeå University (Sweden). His research interests concern foundational and applied aspects in Artificial Intelligence and Databases, notably formalisms for knowledge representation and reasoning, virtual knowledge graphs for data management and integration, description logics, Semantic Web, and modeling and verification of data-aware processes. He is the author of more than 350 refereed publications, including ones in the most prestigious venues in Artificial Intelligence and Databases, with more than 32000 citations and an h-index of 71, according to Google Scholar. He is a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI) and a Fellow of the ACM. He is the ideator and a co-founder of Ontopic, the first spin-off of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, founded in 2019, and developing solutions and technologies for data management and integration based on virtual knowledge graphs.
Eoghan Flanagan (Samsung Research UK)
Eoghan Flanagan is a Senior Researcher at Samsung Research UK, working on applications of ontologies and knowledge graphs. Eoghan has significant experience of statistical machine learning and natural language processing and is interested in the intersection of formal reasoning and statistical ML.
Pavel Klinov (Stardog)
Pavel Klinov is currently a VP of R&D at Stardog Union, a company offering a commercial knowledge graph-based data unification platform. Pavel has been a member of the DL community since 2008 when he started his PhD at the University of Manchester, UK. After finishing his thesis on practicality of reasoning in a probabilistic DL in 2011, he joined Stardog (then known as Clark & Parsia) and became one of the key engineers of the new product. He spent 2012-2015 as a postdoc at the University of Ulm working on ELK, a reasoner for a lightweight OWL EL fragment for large ontologies, after which he quit academia for good and re-joined Stardog as a senior member of the engineering team. He currently leads the group responsible for SPARQL query optimization and evaluation at Stardog.
Yavor Nenov (Oxford Semantic Technologies)
Yavor is the Chief Scientific Officer of Oxford Semantic Technologies. He has over 10 years of academic and industrial experience with semantic technologies. Yavor has multiple publications at top-ranked AI conferences and journals on spatial reasoning and on the design and development of scalable reasoning systems and their practical applications. He has received awards for best PhD thesis and for best papers at IJCAI 2011 and ISWC 2016.
